Frank Joseph Caliendo, M.D., FACS, FASCRS

Chief – Colon and Rectal Surgery
Long Island Jewish Medical Center

Dr. Caliendo was born and raised on Long Island. He attended Hofstra University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology with a minor in music. He then went on to receive his Medical Degree at The University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School. From there he completed five years of General Surgery training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY. Dr. Caliendo then chose to pursue specialty training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ. There he trained under Dr. Eugene Salvati, regarded as one of the “fathers” of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Before completing his specialty training Dr. Caliendo was asked to remain in New Jersey and join Dr. Salvati’s group. Honored by the opportunity Dr. Caliendo did so and has been an integral part of the training of twelve colon and rectal surgery residents. Dr. Caliendo remained in NJ until 2005 when he was recruited by Dr. John Procaccino to become part of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at North Shore University Hospital’s Center for Colon and Rectal Diseases. In 2012, Dr. Caliendo was given the title of Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

Along with the expertise in treating colon and rectal diseases, Dr Caliendo brings with him a vast experience in laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery. Dr. Caliendo has performed hundreds of laparoscopic colon and rectal surgical operations and has been teaching the procedure to colon and rectal surgical residents since 2000. In addition to laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery, Dr. Caliendo has been at the forefront of robotic surgery for the colon and rectum. With the robotic system Dr. Caliendo is able to facilitate surgery deep in the pelvis, giving tremendous visualization and access that was previously not possible. This advancement has enabled even more minimally invasive resections of the colon and rectum.

Dr Caliendo is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery as well as the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. (FASCRS). Dr. Caliendo has presented research at local and regional colon and rectal surgical society meetings as well as the national meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Dr. Caliendo’s practice consists of the treatment of routine and complex disorders of the colon, rectum and anus. His areas of interest include laparoscopic and robotic surgery for the treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the colon and rectum as well as the use of newer modalities for the treatment of hemorrhoids and fecal incontinence.

Dr. Caliendo lives on Long Island with his wife Elaine and their four sons. He enjoys music, boating and cooking.
